“The situation is stable,” NASA said in a statement Wednesday.

A planned spacewalk outside the International Space Station has been postponed due to a “medical concern” with one of the crew members aboard the orbital complex, NASA announced Wednesday.
The excursion was set to begin Thursday morning. Astronauts Mike Fincke and Zena Cardman planned to head outside the space station for six-and-a-half hours to prepare for the installation of new roll-out solar arrays set to arrive later this year. The arrival of the new solar arrays will be the final major upgrade to the lab’s electrical system before the space station’s decommissioning in 2030.
Privacy paramount
NASA said the crew member’s medical concern arose Wednesday afternoon, and officials will reschedule the spacewalk.
“Due to medical privacy, it is not appropriate for NASA to share more details about the crew member,” the agency said in a statement. “The situation is stable. NASA will share additional details, including a new date for the upcoming spacewalk, later.”
This was supposed to be the first of two spacewalks this month. On a second excursion next week, astronauts were expected to complete a series of maintenance tasks outside the station.
Fincke and Cardman are five months into their expedition on the ISS. Cardman is a spaceflight rookie, and this was to be her first spacewalk. It was to be the 10th spacewalk in Fincke’s career, trying him for most spacewalks by a NASA astronaut.
NASA did not say if the unspecified medical issue was with Fincke, Cardman, or someone else on the space station. The seven-person crew currently staffing the ISS includes three US astronauts, three Russian cosmonauts, and one Japanese astronaut: Kimiya Yui, who was assigned to oversee the suit-up of Fincke and Cardman ahead of Thursday’s spacewalk.
The space agency typically does not divulge details about the health of its astronauts, citing restrictions on sharing medical information. It is rare for a crew health concern to postpone a major event like a spacewalk. NASA delayed a spacewalk in 2021 when one of the astronauts encountered what the agency said was a “minor medical issue.” The astronaut in question, Mark Vande Hei, later confirmed on social media the reason for the delay was a pinched nerve.
The spacewalk went ahead several weeks later with a different astronaut taking Vande Hei’s place.
