A report on phone thefts in London shows that one brand is especially unpopular among thieves.

Widespread theft is a serious issue during the holidays in many cities around the world, but especially in tourist hotspots. Travelers are repeatedly warned not to leave valuables like wallets and smartphones unattended, and to avoid places where robberies are common.

London is one such place. According to statistics from the Metropolitan Police, over 100,000 mobile phone thefts were reported in 2024. However, those phone thieves are apparently only targeting certain models, reports London Centric.

According to the report, there have been repeated incidents of smartphones being stolen and returned after a short time with an unexpected comment: “Don’t want no Samsung.”

In January, a 32-year-old Londoner was attacked on the street by eight men who took everything from him under threat of violence, including camera, cap, and phone. When the thief realized that it was a Samsung device, he turned around and gave it straight back.

Another man noticed too late that a passing cyclist had stolen his phone out of his pocket. A short time later, however, the phone ended up on the ground—the thief didn’t want it because it was a Samsung device.

What’s wrong with Samsung phones?

It remains to be seen whether these are curious individual cases or a wider pattern. Nevertheless, it’s astonishing that thieves are so reluctant to steal Samsung smartphones that they’d rather give them back or leave them behind on the ground.

There are no official figures on the “popularity” of certain smartphone manufacturers among thieves. However, thieves presumably target devices that have a particularly high resale value. This means that iPhones would be particularly popular, as they’re still worth a lot even when used. However, many would probably dismantle stolen devices into individual parts and only then sell them.

Although Samsung devices aren’t exactly cheap, they do have a few extra protection mechanisms such as Theft Detection Lock, which automatically locks the device as soon as it’s taken out of your pocket. This may also act as a deterrent to thieves who think that these smartphones aren’t worth the hassle.
