We’ve seen some decent evidence that Nvidia won’t be ready to reveal a full next-gen GPU, presumably the GeForce RTX 50 series, until sometime in 2025. But that doesn’t mean there won’t be any new cards between now and then — a whole calendar year bereft of new retail products isn’t a great look. So two rumored spots in that lineup are gentle bumps to existing cards, the RTX 4070 Super and 4080 Super. With invites going out for a CES press event, it looks like they might come as soon as January.

The Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is the biggest trade show in technology, though its post-pandemic attendance has been well below its usual massive numbers. According to The Verge and other outlets, Nvidia is sending out press invitations for a “Special Address” at the show (or at least coinciding with it) on January 8th. Though specifics aren’t shared, that would make sense as the debut for the announcement of refreshed upgrade cards.

The timing is a bit odd. Launching entirely new graphics cards at CES isn’t common lately, especially for Nvidia, which tends to have a major presence at the Game Developer Conference in March and puts on its own GPU Technology Conference (GTC) twice a year. Putting on my robe and wizard hat technology columnist glasses, I suppose announcing a mid-series refresh of two cards focused squarely at consumers might be a better fit at the much larger event, especially if the retail launch is scheduled for later in January or February.

Previous rumors indicate that the GeForce RTX 4070 Super and 4080 Super will have considerably boosted video RAM, a point of contention for the RTX 40 series and its high price tags, with the more expensive model getting a full 20GB. Early spec boosts show widened memory busses, 192 to 256 bits for the 4070 Super and up to 320 for the 4080 Super. Naturally, prices have not been seen as of yet.
